Workshop: Making a Horizontal Cork Hive

Learn to invite Honey Bee Swarms in self-created Nesting Locations in Nature

March 21, 2026 to March 22, 2026 – 9-17h
Carrascalinho (near Rogil, Aljezur)

Facilitated by Jack Golds and Annelieke van der Sluijs.
In English, happily translated into Portuguese on request.

21st and 22nd of March, 9 am – 5 pm

This practical, 2-day workshop is an excellent opportunity to learn how to build and install a horizontal cork hive, contributing to the preservation of honeybees and their health. During the second day, we introduce the magic and regenerative power of swarming. Throughout both days, there will be an exhibition of different types of hives, allowing for a comparison between more natural nests and conventional square hives, as well as discussions on essential factors to support bee well-being.

During this 2-day workshop, you will receive information and practical guidance for your own creative journey with the bees. You will learn

  • To build a horizontal cork hive, and how you can adapt the design according to the resources you have available.
  • To choose a location for a bee hive, and to install a horizontal cork hive in a tree.
  • The fundamentals of swarming: why bees swarm, why it is so important they do so, and how the hive you offer can support regeneration by swarming.
  • How to prepare a bee hive to attract a swarm, and what you can do when you see a swarm.
  • Some basic relationships between bee colony health, local habitat and hive parameters like type, size, rain protection and material choices.

This course provides basic knowledge to support bees with suitable nesting spaces in nature. It is part of our rewilding initiative, promoting the installation of natural nests to support honeybee conservation.

Contribution: €120. This includes 2 days of workshop programme and documentation to take home. We plan to have lunch with all the participants together, so we ask that you please bring something that can be shared (pot luck). Drinking water will be available on site.
