Lemniscate Wonder

Bees, cycles and the infinite dance of opposites

Lemniscate Wonder

By Sandira Belia

Two loops, one centre, no beginning and no end. We call it the infinity sign, the lying eight, or by its older and more poetic name: the lemniscate.

The word comes from the Latin lemniscatus, “adorned with ribbons”, itself from the Greek lêmniskos, the woollen ribbon tied to the crown of victors. The ∞ sign began to stand for infinity in mathematics in the 17th century.

Today, more and more people love to wear it: tattooed on a wrist, hung on a chain, engraved inside a ring. Few could say exactly why. Something in us recognises it.

For me, the teachings of the lemniscate are profound, and the ones who taught me to open to them are the bees. Through them, I learn how this world is woven: its rhythms, its dynamics, and the keys that keep it in balance.

And one of the most surprising manifestations of the lemniscate in the world of bees is found in their dance.

The waggle dance of the bee

When a scout bee finds a good source of nectar, pollen, propolis or water, she comes home to the hive and dances. The Austrian scientist Karl von Frisch spent decades observing the dark interior of the hive before he could partially translate this choreography into human language.

If the source is close, under about 100 metres, the dance is a simple circle. Beyond that, it becomes a lemniscate: the scout runs a straight line while waggling her abdomen, loops back on one side, runs the line again, then loops back on the other side. Since the hive is plunged in darkness, her sisters do not watch the dance. They read it with their legs and antennae, as vibration.

The dance carries three messages:

  • Direction. On the vertical comb, “up” always stands for the sun. The angle of the waggle run from the vertical matches the angle between the sun and the food source. As the sun moves, the bees adjust the angle.
  • Distance. The longer the waggle run, the farther away the source, or the more uneven the path to reach it.
  • Quality. The more intense the waggling, the more abundant or remarkable the source. A field of lavender in full bloom inspires a particularly lively dance.

The same dance is performed on a swarm cluster, when scouts report on a possible new home. A whole colony chooses its future through the lemniscate.

Lemniscates are everywhere

The Bee Deva tells me that this dance is much greater than its practical function. “When we trace the lemniscate, we reinforce our resonance with a universal choreography, a cosmic dance performed by all forms at every level of the Universe.”

Once you start looking, you find it everywhere:

  • Breath: inhale, a turning point, exhale, a turning point, then inhale again.
  • Day and night, flowing into each other at dawn and dusk.
  • Summer and winter, meeting at the equinoxes.
  • Waking and sleeping, activity and rest.
  • Life and death, the great loop of incarnation.

Science shows it too. Light travels as intertwined electric and magnetic waves. The double helix of DNA twists and turns to multiply the living. And even the sun, photographed from the same spot at the same hour throughout a year, traces a figure eight in the sky: the analemma.

The solar path and the lunar path

As she dances, the bee turns alternately to the right and to the left, always passing back through the centre. The clockwise loop follows the solar path, the right-hand path. The counter-clockwise loop follows the lunar path, the left-hand path.

These two paths are intimately linked. If we insist on staying on only one side, imbalance sets in. Even when they seem opposed, they belong to each other. Many traditions hold this same knowledge:

  • In Taoism, Yin and Yang attract and repel each other in an endless round, each carrying the seed of the other.
  • In yoga and tantra, two subtle channels wind around the spine: Pingala on the right, solar and warming, and Ida on the left, lunar and cooling. According to many teachings, they cross at each chakra before meeting at the third eye.
  • In the ancient European traditions of bee shamanism, these two paths are honoured through dedicated rituals.

From this relationship, at once dual and unified, the manifest world is born. And the bees add something essential: each loop is slightly wider than the one before. The lemniscate does not go round in circles. It unfolds, and with each cycle consciousness grows.

The zero point, eye of the cyclone

The centre of the lemniscate, the zero point, is like the eye of a cyclone. A deep peace reigns there. Beyond space and time, the zero point represents absolute peace. But in the manifest world, it is impossible to stop there completely – only relative peace exists. It is found and maintained by taking care to balance the polarities.

Fundamentally, every point is the zero point of the system that surrounds it. The zero point is a portal, which can be spatial or temporal. Thus, every point in space or time is a potential opening, a passage between the worlds.

Some portals are larger and more powerful than others. The times of the full moon and the new moon, for example, are eminent temporal portals, during which large amounts of energy become available. During these periods, the veils grow thinner and the permeability between the worlds increases, inviting beings to journey.

And at the heart of every zero point, all centres are one. There is only one centre, and it is everywhere.

A living lemniscate in my life

When we call for balance, the lemniscate reveals itself in many aspects of life. Here is one example of how it shows up in mine.

I was born a woman, and I am deeply happy to be one. Yet all my life, I have often felt more at ease with developing masculine qualities. I like to understand intellectually, I like to guide and teach. I like goals, structures and energetic mechanics. My body holds a lot of fire, with small breasts and short hair. I have also known the shadow of the masculine: pushing, forcing, being patronising, looking down on others, controlling.

Then I met a partner who happily identifies as a man, with a strong inner feminine. He carries softness, patience, loving care, compassion and deep listening. He prefers organic growth and fluidity over predefined trajectories. He has also known the shadow of the feminine: letting himself be controlled, self-doubt, indecision, over-accepting, not standing up for his rights.

Since we have been together, I have watched the lemniscate accomplish its great work. We constantly mirror each other, feeding back life lessons for more growth and harmony. Of course there are challenges and potholes on the path, because we are so different… But I know without a shadow of a doubt that this journey is orchestrated by lemniscatic life forces that I deeply trust.

In the couples around me, whether gay, straight or otherwise, I observe these lemniscatic dynamics with curiosity and wonder.

And couples are only one example. When I truly look, I see the same dance everywhere, at every scale.

A map for life explorers

The lemniscate is an intuitive navigation chart, reminding us to return to our centre between each wandering, whether its polarity is positive – like the day – or negative – like the night…

It offers guidance to life explorers, to all who are dedicated to growing and expanding the global field of consciousness.

It also invites healing. For over time, many lemniscatic patterns have been distorted: the masculine and the feminine, humans and nature, activity and rest. Where the flow between two poles was broken, knots and blocks formed. Each time we restore the dance between opposites, within ourselves, in our relationships, in our communities, we help untie those knots and let life circulate again.

Here is my invitation: look at your life through the lens of the lemniscate. Notice the people and situations that mirror your opposite. They may be bringing you exactly the lesson you called for.

Join the Hive Experience

There is still time to join the Hive Experience, a 6-week online journey of rebirth guided by the bees, running from 25 October to 5 December 2026.

Through live sessions, inspiring guest speakers, daily audio practices and a vibrant community of kindred spirits, we will dive deep into the teachings of the hive. Like the bee’s dance, we will move between inspiration and embodiment, between the individual and the collective, always returning to the centre.

If you feel a resonance with the bees and are called to shed old patterns and be reborn into a deeper expression of who you truly are, the hive is waiting for you.
